Singing in the (Disney) Rain
When you picture a vacation to Walt Disney World, chances are you’re imagining blue skies, sunshine, and that perfect Florida glow. But what happens when the clouds roll in and the rain starts to fall? Believe it or not, a rainy day at Disney isn’t a setback, it’s a hidden opportunity. Some of my favorite park memories have happened under a poncho, with lighter crowds, shorter wait times, and that cozy, carefree feeling that comes from dancing through the parks in the rain. So instead of letting a little weather dampen your plans, embrace it, because at Disney, the magic doesn’t stop when it rains… it just takes on a whole different sparkle!
And if you ask true Disney fans? Rain doesn’t scare them off one bit, it’s practically part of the magic. The Disney Nerd Podcast crew are all about leaning in. Disney Nerd Ed says, “when it rains, we run to the parks. We figure most people are getting their rainy day list of things to do, we hit the rides harder”. Disney Nerd Ian and his wife Michelle come prepared with raincoats and a plan, sharing that rainy days often mean lighter crowds and the chance to get more done.
And then there’s Disney Nerd Mellissa, who truly embraces every drop of that warm Florida rain. In the video below, you’ll see her and her friends laughing, splashing, and simply enjoying being together. Proof that a little rain doesn’t dampen the magic, it just makes for even more unforgettable memories.
Disney Nerd Lisa, who lives close to Walt Disney World, takes a slightly different approach. She may opt to stay home on especially wet days, but when she does head onto property, she loves resort hopping and soaking in all those cozy indoor atmospheres.
When I wake up to the sound of rain at Walt Disney World, I actually lean into a slightly slower start. Instead of rushing out the door, I’ll take my time, enjoy a relaxed breakfast, and ease into the day, because let’s be honest, the parks aren’t going anywhere! Of course, a little prep goes a long way. You’ll often hear people suggest grabbing those super cheap ponchos before your trip, but I’m firmly team Disney poncho. The Mickey ones you can pick up at your resort or in the parks are lightweight yet durable, and they don’t cling or flap around like the flimsy dollar store versions. They typically run around $12–$15 USD, but they’re reusable and hold up so much better, making them well worth it in my opinion. Plus, I love that they keep my hands free, unlike umbrellas, which I find tricky to manage in crowds and not nearly as effective when the wind picks up.
Footwear is another big one. Nothing, and I mean nothing, will ruin your day faster than soggy socks. I always recommend waterproof shoes and tossing an extra pair of socks in your bag just in case. If it’s warm, I personally love wearing my Crocs. They dry quickly, and I don’t mind getting a little wet. My husband, Jason, on the other hand, sticks with his running shoes, so he makes sure to bring backups for the next day, and extra socks to stay comfortable. I’ve seen some people use rubber shoe covers too, which could be worth looking into, though I’d be curious how they hold up (and how slippery they might be). As for kids in full rain jackets, they can work, but in that warm Florida rain, lighter and more breathable is definitely the way to go.
One of my favorite rainy day hacks? Packing a few freezer sized Ziploc bags. They’re perfect for protecting your phone, portable chargers, and anything else you want to keep dry. And don’t underestimate the power of a small hand towel, we’ve even grabbed one from the hotel before heading out. It’s a lifesaver when you duck into an air conditioned shop or ride and suddenly feel that chill from being damp. A quick dry off can make all the difference in staying comfortable and ready to keep the magic going!
And once we’re ready to head out? Rain or shine, we’re off to the parks, and more often than not, that means starting our day at EPCOT. It’s easily our go-to park when the weather isn’t cooperating, and honestly, it might just be the best place to be on a rainy Disney day. EPCOT is filled with incredible indoor pavilions, many of which offer a full mix of attractions, rides, shows, dining, and shopping, all under one roof. You could truly spend hours (or even your entire day) exploring these spaces while staying dry and still soaking up all that Disney magic.
So let’s start there, because when the rain starts to fall, EPCOT really knows how to shine.
If you ask me where to start at EPCOT on a rainy day, my answer will always be Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. This is hands down one of my favorite coasters in all of Walt Disney World. It’s incredibly smooth, full of twists and turns, and paired with an amazing soundtrack of throwback hits from the movies. My family has even turned it into a bit of a tradition, we always try to guess which song we’ll get and make little bets before we board! For the record, my personal favorite is “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears. And the best part on a rainy day? The entire experience is indoors, including the queue. If the line gets really long, it might extend just slightly outside, but it moves quickly and you won’t be stuck in the rain for long at all.
From there, we almost always make our way over to the The Land Pavilion, and honestly, I could spend hours here when it’s raining. Between Soarin' Around the World and Living with the Land, you’ve got two incredible rides that are completely indoors and perfect for escaping the weather. Sourin’gives you that breathtaking, hang gliding feeling as you travel across some of the world’s most beautiful landmarks, while Living with the Land is a slower, peaceful boat ride that takes you behind the scenes of Disney’s innovative greenhouses and farming techniques.
You can also catch the film Awesome Planet while you’re here, a short but powerful 10 minute movie that celebrates the beauty of Earth while highlighting the importance of protecting it. It’s a great spot to sit, relax, dry off a bit, and take in something meaningful.
And of course… we can’t forget the food! Sunshine Seasons is a fantastic quick service option tucked right inside the pavilion, offering a variety of fresh and delicious options for everyone in the family. What makes it even cooler is that some of the ingredients you’re eating may have been grown right there in the pavilion! Through Disney’s sustainable agriculture program, produce like lettuce, tomatoes, and herbs are grown in the greenhouses you see on Living with the Land, and then used in meals throughout the park. It’s such a neat full circle moment and just adds to the magic of the experience.
Before we leave EPCOT, there are even more incredible indoor experiences to take advantage of beyond the World Showcase pavilions. Attractions like Mission: SPACE, Spaceship Earth, Journey Into Imagination with Figment, and The Seas with Nemo & Friends (where you can explore the aquariums and catch Turtle Talk with Crush) are all perfect rainy day escapes. You can also hop aboard Gran Fiesta Tour, experience Frozen Ever After, or enjoy shows like Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along and The American Adventure. And of course, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure is another must do that keeps you dry while still delivering all the fun.
But even though EPCOT is usually our first choice on a rainy day, the truth is, every single park has plenty of ways to stay dry while still making the most of your day.
At Magic Kingdom, there’s no shortage of indoor attractions to keep the magic going. From classics like Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, and “it’s a small world,” to family favorites like Peter Pan’s Flight, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, you can easily fill your day without worrying about the weather. Space Mountain is another great option, and shows like Carousel of Progress, Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor, Enchanted Tiki Room, and Journey of the Little Mermaid offer the perfect chance to sit, relax, and dry off.
Over at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, you’ll find a mix of thrilling rides and entertaining shows that are ideal when the rain rolls in. Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, Star Tours, and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance are all fantastic options. Toy Story Mania is always a hit, and while Tower of Terror does have some outdoor queue space, it’s often much shorter during rainy weather. There are also plenty of great shows to enjoy, including the Frozen Sing Along, Disney Junior Dance Party, and the new Villains show. And while Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster is currently closed, we’re all eagerly awaiting its Muppets themed return in summer 2026!
At Animal Kingdom, a rainy day can actually make the park feel even more magical. Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey are both incredible indoor attractions, and shows like Festival of the Lion King and Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond! are perfect for getting out of the rain while still being completely immersed in Disney storytelling. Don’t skip Kilimanjaro Safaris either, this is one ride I enjoy in the rain. The cooler temperatures and mist often make the animals more active, which can make for a really memorable experience.
And beyond the rides and shows, don’t forget about all the little extras that make a rainy Disney day special. Duck into shops, take your time browsing, or sit down for a relaxed meal while you wait for the rain to pass. There are also plenty of indoor character meet and greets across all four parks. Just check your My Disney Experience app to see who’s appearing that day.
And here’s a little bonus idea we haven’t tried yet, but it sounds so fun. Consider heading to one of the water parks during a warm Florida rain! Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon usually stay open as long as there’s no thunder or lightning, which means you could be sliding down a waterslide and getting soaked while the rest of the world might be hiding under umbrellas. Think about it: everything else is wet anyway, so why not embrace it fully? It could turn a rainy day into one of the most memorable adventures of your trip.
But honestly? Some of the best moments come when you stop trying to dodge the rain altogether. You’re on vacation. You’re at Walt Disney World. So live it up!
Put on that poncho, splash through a few puddles, hop on your favorite ride with little to no wait, and maybe even dance your way down Main Street in the rain. Because just like the Disney Nerds say when it rains … go, go, go.
And trust me, those might just be the moments you remember most.
Just keep Dreaming and Disney’ing!
Terri Lee
